Why I Sponsored Power Rotation Bill – Senator Abba Moro

0

Constituents drawn from nine local government areas of Benue South Senatorial District had tasked Senator Abba Moro to do everything possible for power to shift to his Idoma speaking people of the state.

Since the creation of the state in 1976, the Tiv, constituting two senatorial districts of the
state, have continued to hold sway to the
foremost seat of power in the state, excluding the minority Idoma in the South senatorial district.

But as permutations for the 2023 general
elections begin, the Idoma people had
asked Moro to introduce a bill for power rotation in the country to enable them to benefit democratically in the state.

Speaking with journalists, Moro confirmed that it was why he sponsored the bill for the rotation of political power among the geo-political zones, senatorial districts and federal constituencies, in presidential, gubernatorial, senatorial and House of Representatives offices in Nigeria which has successfully passed first reading.

“So I came here and said, what can be done, maybe create a legislative intervention, provide for a Law that will compel all the political parties to select candidates from even minority areas, that is why I recently proposed a power rotation Bill to rotate governorship among the senatorial district and then the presidency between the North and the South.

“I believe this will create some peace, stability and also reveal the rich attitude of our people because people will know that Yes, they can aspire to any position in the land no matter their status or where they come from, religion and tribe, if they know that that is possible, they will re-double their efforts and recommitment to the cause of the country.”

The bill, when passed into law, will address the issue of marginalization of minority ethnic groups and tribes in the country, give equal opportunities to every Nigerian citizen to contribute to nation building, unite and harness our diversity as a source of strength rather than polarization, ignite the spirit of patriotism and nationalism among citizens, and inspire hope in the project ‘Nigeria’.

Although, the advocacy was unsuccessful as none of the major political parties threw up a governorship candidate from the Idoma speaking area of the state.
