Ahead of May 28th final clash in Paris, Real Madrid coach, Carlo Ancelotti has insisted his side’s progression to the highly competitive Champions League final is ”something strange”.
His declaration follows his team’s 3-1 semi-final second leg win over Premier League bigwig, Manchester City on Wednesday, 4th May 2022.
The Los Blancos narrowly edged past Pep Guardiola’s Citizens with a late comeback as hitman, Karim Benzema’s extra-time penalty goal produced an incredible 6-5 aggregate win and a spot in the final.
Two goals in two minutes from substitute Rodrygo that sent the tie to extra-time served as a dramatic turnaround for the 13-time winners who were trailing 5-3 on aggregate heading into the 90th minute after Riyad Mahrez had given City a lead in the 73rd minute.
The almost far-fetched win is the latest for the La Liga giants, who had also trailed to Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 and Chelsea in the quarter-finals before rallying late to advance.
Speaking in a post-match interview at the Bernabeu, the 62-year-old gaffer expressed surprise at the turnout of events, stating his side was the least pick for the feat.
“Something strange has happened. We’ve had fantastic nights. We’ve played against very strong teams, teams seen as candidates to win the Champions League.
“The players never gave up. It’s special here. Nobody thought Real Madrid would play another final this year, and we’re there.”
