What We Are Doing To Stop Se-xual Harassment In Schools – ICPC | DETAILS

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has raised an alarm about an upsurge in s-exual harassment cases across Nigerian academic institutions of learning.

The Commission’s Chairman, Bolaji Owasanoye, whil speaking in Abuja on Monday in a one-day stakeholders’ summit on the proposed rule on “Sexual Harassment for Educational Institutions” warned stakeholders in various establishments to abstain from any sort of se-xual pleasure that could jeopardize their careers.

He emphasized that the Act that founded the ICPC enabled it to prosecute anyone guilty of se-xual misconduct in court, just as it did with OAU professor Richard Akindele, who sought se-x gratification from his students.

“The Commission has successfully proved in court that se-xual harassment is an abuse of power where the perpetrator abuses his position and advantage to demand and at times obtain se-xual gratification from the victim. Indeed, the Commission by the case of FRN vs Richard Akindele established that mere demand for gratification is an offence which the Commission can and will prosecute.

The Commission is by this project improving its ability to respond to myriad cases of se-xual harassment via abuse of power, especially with regard to educational institutions most notably tertiary and secondary education institutions. This is not to suggest that se-xual harassment does not exist in other areas of society but the situation with educational institutions can be rightly described as epidemic,”
