In an unprecedented move that signifies the growing popularity and acceptability of the candidate of SDP in Isiala Ngwa North/South Federal Constituency, retirees in the two local government’s, on Tuesday Jan 15, threw their weight behind Barr Oracle Chukwudi Nwala, in a meeting that held at Mbawsi Central Primary school.
In his welcome address, the Leader of the retirees, Chief G.A Erondu, described Barr Nwala’s visit as God ordained, pointing to the light showers as proof that God’s hand is evident in his coming. He described Barr Nwala as a different kind of politician whose capacity cannot be called to question.
The party Chairman in Isiala Ngwa North, Chief Chijioke Ozems, thanked the Senior Citizens for coming out en masse to receive their candidate. He regretted that government has not done enough to protect the interest of senior citizens, especially retired civil servants. He promised that the party’s candidate will support bills that protects the interest of retirees.
In his own contribution, a retired Assistant Airport Manager, Engr. Ekekwuo, said he’s supporting the candidacy of Barr Nwala because of the good intentions he has for the constituency. Sir E.E Nwala, who is also a pensioner and the father of the candidate, urged his fellow retirees to support his son because he knows the plight of pensioners and will not abandon them if he wins.
Responding, Barr Oracle Nwala expressed dissatisfaction with the ill treatment meted out to pensioners. He vowed to fight for the domestication of the Pension Act of 2004, to ensure that civil servants get their gratuity on retirement. The legal luminary described the retirees as leaders of thought and influential members of the Constituency who can see beyond money to understand the importance of sending a capable representative to Abuja. He told the visibly impressed crowd that the contest for who should represent nde Isiala Ngwa, should be the hardest because of the big shoes left behind by the progenitor of Ngwa Politics, Rt Hon Jaja Anucha Wachukwu.
In an emotional speech that concluded the meeting, Mr. Ndubuisi Jaja Wachukwu, who fought back tears, told the retirees that listening to Barr. Oracle Nwala brings back fond memories of his late father, Rt Hon Jaja Anucha. He threw his weight behind the legal luminary and expressed confidence that he will succeed at the polls.
