Hon. Dr. Sam Onuigbo, the South East representative of the North East Development Commission, NEDC, has called for urgent actions to be taken to tackle climate change and all factors posing as threats to the planet.
Hon. Onuigbo made the call on Wednesday, while speaking during the 2024 World Environment Day Celebration at library conference hall, National Root Crops Research Institute, NRCRI Umudike, Abia State.
With emphasis on this year’s World Environment Day’s theme; “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience” Onuigbo called on communities and individuals to join hands in the fight to save the world.
He noted that in a bid to encourage communities to protect the environment, section 26 of the Climate change Act provided that ” the secretariate with the approval of the council, advise ministries, departments and agencies responsible for the educational curriculum in Nigeria on the integration of climate change into various disciplines and subjects across all edcuational levels”.
He further harped on the need to create a peaceful and flourishing environment for generations yet to come.
He added;
“With all these severe and unpredictable weather events like tornadoes, flooding, Desertification, landslides, drought, etc, we do not need anyone to educate us that our planet is threatened.
“All hands must be on deck to save the planet. We want the generations that are coming behind us to have a peaceful and flourishing environment. We do not want the planet to be destroyed.”
