The Abia International Film Festival (ABIFF) has been unveiled, marking a significant milestone for Abia State. This pioneering event, dedicated to promoting arts, culture, and science through film, seeks to empower local youth, boost tourism, and attract international filmmakers. With a focus on training and job creation, ABIFF aims to position Abia as a premier destination in the global film industry.
In a historic move for Abia State, the inaugural Abia International Film Festival (ABIFF) was officially launched on the 25th of July 2024 in Umuahia, signaling a new era for arts, culture, and tourism in the region. The event, spearheaded by Dr. Alex Elekwa, President/Founder of ABIFF, is set to transform the state’s cultural landscape and provide new opportunities for its youth.
The Abia International Film Festival (ABIFF), described as a groundbreaking initiative, aims to promote arts and culture through motion pictures, highlighting the beauty and richness of storytelling from Abia State. Dr. Elekwa emphasized the importance of bringing the art of filmmaking closer to the local community, stating, “Having traveled far and wide, I saw the need to bring closer to our people the beauty of outstanding storytelling.”
One of ABIFF’s key objectives is to train Abia’s youth in various aspects of film production, thereby empowering them to become self-employed and create job opportunities within their communities. Dr. Elekwa highlighted Nollywood’s status as Nigeria’s largest employer and expressed confidence that ABIFF’s activities will be pivotal in the growth and development of the state’s youth.
The Abia International Film Festival (ABIFF) also aims to attract global filmmakers, providing a platform for them to showcase their work in Abia. This international exposure is expected to open new investment opportunities and elevate Abia’s profile as a prime destination for film tourism.
Dr. Elekwa acknowledged the support of key figures in the film industry, including Mr. Hope Obioma Opara, President and Founder of the Eko International Film Festival, who has brought over 15 years of experience to ABIFF as its Festival Director. Mr. Wisdom Nwankwo, a renowned Nollywood actor and director, will contribute to training and motivating young filmmakers. The festival’s team also includes Mr. Ahamefule Ndubuisi, Festival Coordinator, and several other notable members.
ABIFF’s first theme, “Cultivating Abia’s Next Generation of Film Creatives,” reflects its commitment to nurturing local talent and fostering a vibrant film industry in the state. The festival is also a call to action for the Abia State government to support and partner with this initiative to showcase the state’s rich cultural heritage and untapped film locations.
Dr. Elekwa concluded with an invitation to join the cinematic revolution, stating, “Are you ready to be a part of Abia’s cinematic revolution? Join us to shine a spotlight on Abia’s creative spirit and ignite a passion for filmmaking!”
