Senate President Akpabio has refuted allegations of having multiple girlfriends, asserting he has only one wife amid social media scrutiny.
The president of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has finally broken his silence on the rumours of having numerous girlfriends.
Akpabio made the clarification in a statement made on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday.
He denied the allegations, stating that he has only one wife and she is enough for him.
He said, “I will not intentionally denigrate any woman and I always pray that God will uplift women,” he said.
“Distinguished Senator Natasha, I want to apologise to you.
“The interest shown in the social media shows that we have enemies. I felt I should tender a public apology to you. I do not mean any harm. People should concentrate on things that will move this country forward.
“Social media handlers should practice with decorum. We won’t out of anger regulate social media.”
On claims that he has “numerous girlfriends,” Akpabio said: “I have only one wife and she is enough for me.”
The Senate President’s denial comes after weeks of intense scrutiny on social media, with many calling for his resignation.
Akpabio’s statement was prompted by the backlash he received for his remarks to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, whom he told not to speak like she was in a “night club” after she spoke without being recognized by the Senate President.
