Governor Sanwo-Olu and former Governor Ambode met to discuss the future of Lagos State, marking a significant reconciliation between the two leaders. Their conversation focused on building upon the solid foundation already in place to ensure continued growth and development for Lagos.
In a significant move for Lagos State, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu met with his predecessor, Akinwunmi Ambode, to discuss the future trajectory of the state. This meeting, which took place at Lagos House, is more than just a courtesy call; it represents a crucial step in mending past political rifts and uniting to ensure Lagos’ continued growth.
Governor Sanwo-Olu shared the news on his X page on Monday, stating, “Today, I welcomed my brother and predecessor, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, back to Lagos House on a courtesy visit. Our conversation centred around the future of Lagos and building on the solid foundation already in place. I value his perspective as we all work together to ensure that Lagos remains on the path of growth and development.”
This meeting is particularly noteworthy given the history between the two leaders. Ambode, who served as governor from 2015, lost his bid for re-election in 2019 during the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election, a loss marked by a bitter fallout with Sanwo-Olu. The tension between the two was palpable and had persisted for years, reflecting deeper internal conflicts within the ruling political class in Lagos.
However, the ice began to thaw in 2023 when Sanwo-Olu and Ambode publicly reconciled during a reception held in honor of President Bola Tinubu at Lagos House, Marina. This was the first time in over four years that Sanwo-Olu, Ambode, and another former governor, Babatunde Fashola, were seen together, signaling a potential end to the internal wrangling that had previously plagued the state’s leadership.
The recent meeting between Sanwo-Olu and Ambode underscores a new era of collaboration and mutual respect, as both leaders appear committed to putting the past behind them and focusing on the future of Lagos. With both men on the same page, the state stands to benefit from their combined experience and vision, ensuring that Lagos continues to thrive as Nigeria’s economic powerhouse.
