Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria, has condemned recent calls for the expulsion of Igbos from Lagos and the Southwest. Describing the #IgboMustGo campaign as dangerous and divisive, Atiku urges the government to take immediate action against those inciting hatred and violence.

In a strongly worded statement, former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has voiced his deep concerns over the recent calls on social media for the forced relocation of Igbo people from Lagos and other Southwest states. The campaign, trending under the hashtag #IgboMustGo on X, has sparked widespread outrage and fear among the Nigerian populace.

Atiku, who was the presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, expressed his alarm at the inflammatory rhetoric being spread online. He emphasized that such divisive language not only threatens peace and security but also violates the constitutional rights of every Nigerian to live and work freely anywhere in the country.

“History has shown us the consequences of allowing hatred and bigotry to fester,” Atiku remarked, drawing a parallel to the tragic events in Rwanda. “What began with inflammatory rhetoric led to devastating outcomes. We must learn from these lessons and act decisively.”

In a statement released by his spokesman, Mr. Paul Ibe, Atiku called on the Nigerian government and relevant authorities to take immediate and decisive action against those responsible for inciting ethnic hatred and division. He stressed the importance of investigating, arresting, and prosecuting individuals promoting such dangerous ideologies. “The rule of law must prevail, and those found guilty of incitement should face the full extent of legal consequences,” he asserted.

Atiku also highlighted Nigeria’s strength in its diversity, praising Lagos and the Southwest as melting pots of cultures where people from various backgrounds contribute to collective growth and development. He noted that the Igbo community, along with all other ethnic groups, plays an integral role in this vibrant mosaic.

“I urge all Nigerians to stand united against this divisive rhetoric and to champion unity, tolerance, and understanding,” he continued. “Our future depends on our ability to live and work together harmoniously.”

He also criticized the apparent lack of response from the authorities, noting that five days had passed since the threat emerged without any significant action being taken. He urged the government and security agencies to act swiftly to protect all citizens from discrimination and persecution.

“The silence is troubling,” Atiku concluded. “Immediate action to arrest, investigate, and prosecute those behind this heinous agenda is crucial. This will serve as a deterrent to others who might consider pursuing similar paths that threaten our national security.”
