“President Bola Tinubu and Chinese President Xi Jinping have deepened Nigeria-China bilateral ties with strategic agreements on nuclear energy, media cooperation, and more, aiming for comprehensive development and stability in Africa.”
President Bola Tinubu and Chinese President Xi Jinping have taken a significant step towards deepening bilateral ties between Nigeria and China. The two leaders, who met in Beijing on Tuesday, engaged in high-level talks aimed at forging a stronger partnership for the benefit of their citizens.
During the meeting, both presidents agreed to establish a comprehensive Nigeria-China partnership with a shared future. This was a key outcome of President Tinubu’s official visit to China ahead of his participation in the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), scheduled for September 4-6, 2024.
“This visit is crucial for Nigeria and the rest of Africa, especially in my capacity as Chairman of ECOWAS,” President Tinubu stated. “China-Nigeria relations have spanned over half a century and should be further strengthened to advance our trade and economic development programs.”
President Tinubu emphasized Nigeria’s strategic importance, highlighting its status as the largest economy in Africa with a young population poised to drive economic growth. He described the Nigeria-China relationship as more than just strategic but a “comprehensive developmental partnership” that should lead to enhanced stability, security, and prosperity across West Africa.
On Nigeria’s economic reforms, President Tinubu affirmed his administration’s commitment to sustainable growth through ongoing reforms. “We recognize the need to reform our economy diligently across various sectors, ensuring ease of investment and business operations,” he said. He praised President Xi for the successful reforms in China and aligned Nigeria’s efforts with similar goals.
In his response, President Xi Jinping noted the strong foundation of mutual understanding between Nigeria and China over the past 50 years. He emphasized that strengthening strategic coordination would inject fresh energy into China-Africa relations and foster progress among Global South countries.
President Xi further highlighted the importance of the 2024 FOCAC Summit as a platform to advance China-Africa relations and pledged China’s continued support for Nigeria within this framework.
During the talks, both leaders witnessed the signing of several key Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) covering a wide range of sectors:
A Cooperation Plan to promote the Belt and Road Initiative.
An MOU on the peaceful application of nuclear energy.
An MOU on strengthening human resource development under the Global Development Initiative.
An MOU on media exchange and cooperation, including agreements between the China Media Group and the Nigerian Television Authority.
These agreements mark a new chapter in Nigeria-China relations, positioning both countries to achieve shared development goals and address global challenges collaboratively.
