OPINION: The Calibre Of Abia LGA Chairmanship Appointees; A Radical Departure From The Old Order – By Anokwuru C. U. Ph.D

Leadership, Warren Bennis writes, is the capacity to translate vision into reality. Quality and exemplary leadership delivery, however, is not age-sensitive. It is not determined by how old you are but by experience, moral integrity, and the willingness to deliver service by putting the wider consideration of the human family first, over and above the narrow confines of one’s personal interest.

One of the major leadership setbacks we have had and still have in this country is giving political leadership positions to people who are not fit, people who have nothing to offer. Putting squares pegs in round holes.

The appointment of men of integrity and vast leadership experience into local government chairmanship by the Labour Party-led administration under the able captainship of Dr. Alex Chioma Otti has raised the bar of governance and excellence in Abia. It is the end of the road for miscreants in governance.

There is no denying the fact that the Governor’s recent decision to appoint individuals of unquestionable integrity into key local government positions marks a momentous leap forward in the pursuit of higher standards of governance. This strategic move signifies a departure from conventional practices where individuals lacking ethical foundations are allowed to secure such positions of influence.

By choosing individuals with a proven track record of integrity, the Governor is making a resounding statement about his commitment to fostering a transparent and accountable governance framework in the state. His decision re-echoes the thoughts of America’s 34th President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, that “the supreme quality for leadership is unquestionable integrity.”

This paradigm shift in local government appointments is not merely a procedural adjustment; it is a transformative initiative aimed at reshaping the very fabric of governance at the grassroots level which would help to transform leadership at all levels, since it is the foundation that carries the whole edifice. The emphasis on integrity, honesty, financial means, and a deep-seated commitment to public service becomes the cornerstone of this new era. This is because according to St. Augustine, “Remove morality and what have we but a bunch of criminal gangs on a large scale.”

No doubt, the Governor’s discretionary choice of appointees reflects his profound understanding that the character of those in positions of power has a direct and lasting impact on the well-being of the community. He has shown clearly, in the words of John C. Maxwell, that “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”

This symbolic end of the road for miscreants in governance is a promising signal for citizens who have long yearned for a government free from the shackles of corruption, nepotism, and unethical practices. The Governor’s decisive actions signify a radical departure from inherited historical malpractices in governance, and underline a commitment to building a government that genuinely serves the people, and prioritises their needs above personal or political interests.

As men of integrity assume leadership roles in local governments across the state, there is a palpable anticipation of positive changes permeating various aspects of governance. Improved service delivery, judicious allocation of resources, and a more inclusive approach to decision-making are among the anticipated benefits. Communities can reasonably expect a leadership that is not only accountable but also responsive to the nuanced needs of the diverse population they represent.

Without any gainsaying, the appointment of individuals with strong ethical foundations lays the groundwork for a cultural shift within the local government structures. It is an investment in creating an environment where ethical conduct and responsible leadership is not only expected but celebrated. This move could potentially set off a ripple effect, inspiring a new generation of public servants who prioritise the public good over personal gain.

In conclusion, the Governor’s visionary decision to appoint individuals of integrity into local government positions is a transformative stride towards a more accountable and people-centric governance model. This deliberate move not only reflects a commitment to ethical leadership but also signifies the dawning of a new era where governance is characterised by transparency, accountability, and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of the community. The trajectory is now set for a reinvigorated, principled approach that holds the promise of a brighter future for the constituents and a more resilient foundation for the state’s governance landscape.

The citizens of the various local governments in the state are therefore enjoined to embrace their new leaders and work harmoniously with them for the common good and uniform development of the state. Certainly, “Leadership cannot just go along to get along. Leadership must meet the moral challenge of the day” — Jesse Jackson.
