Owerri Zone Peoples Mandate (OWZOPEM) emerges to advocate for Owerri Zone’s representation in the Imo gubernatorial election, seeking collaboration with Okigwe and Orlu Zones to avoid a clash of interests.
The political landscape in Imo State is heating up as a new group, Owerri Zone Peoples Mandate (OWZOPEM), has emerged to champion the cause of Owerri Zone in the upcoming gubernatorial elections. The formation of OWZOPEM, which was announced over the weekend, aims to ensure that the next governor of Imo State is elected from Owerri Zone, following years of perceived marginalization.
OWZOPEM is spearheaded by notable figures including Prof. Vitalis Orikeze Ajumbe, Capt. David Mbamara, who serves as the Chairman of the new group, and Chief Mike Nwachukwu, the Chairman of the Strategic Committee.
Key Objectives and Strategic Outreach
In a communiqué issued after their inaugural meeting held in Owerri on Saturday, June 29, the group resolved to establish a high-powered committee tasked with reaching out to both Okigwe Zone through the Okigwe Global Elders Forum and Orlu Zone through the Orlu Political Consultative Assembly (OPOCA). This outreach aims to prevent conflicts of interest as each zone seeks to position itself for the governorship.
The communiqué also stated that OWZOPEM will engage with the people of Ohaji/Egbema regarding their decision to remain in Imo State amidst the agitation for the creation of Orlu State. Additionally, the group commended Governor Hope Uzodinma for his support of Owerri Zone’s bid to produce the next governor and his ongoing efforts in the state.
Addressing Historical Inequities
During the meeting, Capt. Mbamara highlighted the historical injustices faced by Owerri Zone, noting that since the creation of Imo State in 1976, the zone has not produced a governor. He emphasized the need for unity and a strong, collective effort to break this cycle and secure the governorship for Owerri Zone in the upcoming elections.
Prof. Ajumbe, speaking at the meeting, stressed the importance of collaboration with other zones, acknowledging that Owerri Zone cannot achieve its goal in isolation. He called for inclusive strategies and the incorporation of diverse ideas to bolster their campaign.
Broad Support and Future Plans
The meeting saw significant attendance from political stakeholders across Owerri Zone, reflecting broad support for the new initiative. OWZOPEM aims to foster a united front and engage in strategic alliances to enhance their chances of success in the 2024 gubernatorial race.
The group reiterated its commitment to fair representation and vowed to continue its efforts to secure the governorship for Owerri Zone. They urged all supporters and stakeholders to maintain their resolve and work towards a common goal, ensuring a brighter political future for the zone.
