Adams Oshiomhole defends his son Cyril Oshiomhole’s appointment as Edo Health Commissioner, citing his qualifications despite public outcry over alleged nepotism.

The recent appointment of Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, son of former Edo State Governor and current Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, as the Edo State Commissioner for Health has sparked widespread debate, with critics questioning the ethics behind the decision.

Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, a medical doctor with postgraduate qualifications from prestigious institutions including Harvard University, was nominated by Governor Monday Okpebholo, a close ally of Adams. The appointment, which has been viewed by some as a product of political favoritism, has ignited heated discussions on nepotism and meritocracy in governance.

Appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Adams Oshiomhole strongly defended his son’s appointment, emphasizing Cyril’s qualifications and experience in public health.

“He is not having it because he is Oshiomhole; I will say he is having it in spite of being Oshiomhole,” the former governor stated.

Adams acknowledged that he initially expressed concerns over the appointment, fearing that it might attract public criticism. “I expressed those concerns to the governor that people might say this and that,” he admitted. However, he justified Cyril’s selection by highlighting his extensive academic credentials and professional competence.

Adams further disclosed that he had previously discouraged his son from entering politics, rejecting Cyril’s earlier attempts to contest for the House of Representatives. “When I was in Edo, I stopped him when he wanted to go for the House of Reps. I said no and supported another guy,” he explained.

Critics, however, argue that the younger Oshiomhole’s appointment reflects a growing trend of leveraging political connections to secure high-profile government positions.

While supporters of the Oshiomhole family have lauded Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole’s appointment as a step toward improving healthcare in Edo State, detractors have labeled it an abuse of power and a classic case of nepotism.

The controversy surrounding the appointment has reignited debates on the role of merit and transparency in public service appointments, particularly in a nation where trust in political institutions is often eroded by accusations of favoritism.

Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole was officially sworn in as Commissioner for Health on November 19, 2024, at the Government House in Benin City.
