“Peter Obi and Alex Otti have joined forces to address the Labour Party’s ongoing leadership crisis, backing the appointment of Senator Nenadi Usman as caretaker chairperson despite strong opposition from incumbent Julius Abure.”
The Labour Party (LP) is facing a fresh wave of internal conflict as its Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, and the only sitting governor of the party, Dr. Alex Otti, have moved to reshape the party’s leadership by endorsing the appointment of ex-Minister of Finance, Senator Nenadi Usman, as the new caretaker chairperson.
This development comes amidst a long-standing leadership crisis that has divided the party’s ranks. The decision to elect Usman was taken at an expanded National Stakeholders Meeting held at the Banquet Hall of the Abia Government House in Umuahia, convened by Governor Otti and attended by Peter Obi, Datti Baba-Ahmed, and other key party members.
Mr. Daniel Gambo, a member of the national transition committee formed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), confirmed the unanimous election of Usman to lead the newly constituted 29-member national caretaker committee. “The stakeholders endorsed Senator Nenadi Usman to chair the LP caretaker committee, which will oversee the conduct of state congresses and an all-inclusive national convention,” Gambo stated.
The committee, consisting of representatives from the Senate, House of Representatives, the six geopolitical zones, NLC, and TUC, aims to reorganize the party, resolve internal disputes, and prepare for future elections.
However, the embattled National Chairman of the Labour Party, Barrister Julius Abure, has rejected the appointment, insisting he remains the legitimate leader of the party. Abure, through a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh, condemned the emergence of Nenadi Usman as illegal and unconstitutional, describing the Abia meeting as “mischievous.”
“We firmly believe in the leadership of our National Chairman Barrister Julius Abure and the National Working Committee,” Ifoh stated. “We are committed to working together as a united party to deliver the dividends of democracy to Nigerians.”
He criticized Governor Otti’s decision to convene the meeting, claiming it lacked proper communication from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). “Government business is conducted through official communication. There is no communication from INEC objecting to our National Convention,” Ifoh argued.
Abure further challenged Otti to provide any official correspondence from INEC regarding the matter, asserting that the newly appointed committee is not recognized by the party’s constitution and accusing its leaders of being outsiders. “The so-called chairman of the caretaker committee is not a registered member of our party. She only emerged during Peter Obi’s presidential campaign,” Ifoh added.
The internal dispute has left the Labour Party in turmoil, as both factions continue their battle for control, with no resolution in sight.
