Ogun State’s INEC REC, Niyi Ijalaye, tragically passed away after attending a critical meeting at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja. His sudden death has left the electoral body in shock.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of the Ogun State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Niyi Ijalaye. The tragic incident occurred on Monday evening after Ijalaye participated in a crucial meeting at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to sources within the Ogun INEC office, Ijalaye, who was an active participant throughout the meeting, returned to his hotel room shortly after the session ended. It was there that he reportedly slumped and died. The Ondo-born REC, dressed in a blue-striped kaftan and a red cap, had engaged fully in discussions led by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu. The meeting focused on the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States and seven vacant positions in the National and State Assemblies.
Ijalaye was appointed as Ogun State’s REC in March 2022, taking over from his predecessor, Olusegun Agbaje, who was transferred to Lagos State. The news of his sudden demise has shocked many within the electoral body and beyond. As of now, INEC is yet to release an official statement confirming the unfortunate incident.
