Unknown gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted Monday Izu, the Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (SSANU), Delta State University, Abraka Branch.
It was gathered that the SSANU chairman was kidnapped on Thursday night.
According to The Punch, the kidnappers, as at today Friday, were yet to open contact with family members of the labour leader.
Confirming Izu’s abduction, the Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State Police Command, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, stated that the police have begun moves to rescue the SSANU boss.
According to the Police spokesperson, efforts were also in top gear to apprehend the abductors.
The abduction by gunmen of Comrade Monday Izu, a vocal unionist, came just 11 days after his 63rd birthday as obtained from his Facebook account.
The kidnapped SSANU-DELSU chairman had, recently, on behalf of other non-academic unions at DELSU, advised the Federal Government not to kill university education in the country.
Meanwhile, the Director-General, All Progressives Congress (APC) Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Salihu Lukman has recommended death as punishment for kidnappers and their helpers.
Lukman said this in a statement where he lamented that everyone is tired of the everyday news about the activities of kidnappers, bandits, and other criminals in Nigeria.
He alleged that some security operatives that are supposed to protect the citizens have even been compromised and are making illegal money from the kidnapping activities.
He also warned that no political or religious sentiment should be allowed in dealing with the matter squarely.
