Several lives were lost in a deadly shooting spree in Awka, Anambra State, with cultism suspected as the cause. Police have taken control of the scene and are investigating the violence.
Awka, the capital of Anambra State, was rocked by a deadly shooting spree on Thursday morning, resulting in the deaths of several people, as violence continues to escalate in the region. According to sources, the shooting occurred around 9:15 a.m. in Ifite, a district largely inhabited by students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, sparking fear among residents and students.
Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen opened fire near the back gate of the university in Awka, close to Amansea Road, leaving victims lying lifeless in the streets. One source, a student who was nearby when the attack occurred, expressed shock, noting that cultism might have been the root cause of the violence.
A lecturer, who witnessed the aftermath of the incident, recounted seeing seven lifeless bodies, prompting her to cancel her lectures and leave the area for safety. The lecturer added, “It was a terrifying scene. I had no choice but to turn back when I saw the bodies lying on the ground.”
This tragic event follows closely on the heels of another shooting incident in nearby Nibo on Sunday, where 12 people were reportedly gunned down in what is believed to have been a cult-related confrontation.
While the exact number of casualties from Thursday’s shooting remains unconfirmed, the Anambra State Police Command has initiated an investigation. The State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that a response team had taken control of the scene, and further details would be communicated in due course.
In a related development, the police have intercepted threatening videos and voice notes circulating on social media, purportedly from individuals planning to unleash further violence in Awka. Ikenga assured the public that the police and other security forces are not taking the threats lightly. He noted that increased patrols, surveillance, and security measures have been put in place to maintain law and order.
As residents continue to live in fear of further violence, the Anambra State Police Command is working to ensure public safety and prevent more bloodshed in the capital.
