FIFA: Nigeria Ranks 32nd In World Football | READ DETAILS
Nigeria has been ranked 32nd in FIFA ‘s latest rankings regardless of an early exit from the just concluded 2021 African Cup of Nations, moving up four places.
According to the football governing body, Nigeria ranks third just behind North African football gaints, Morroco. The historic winners of AFCON 2021, Senegal currently sit at the top position.
Mohammed Salah’s Egypt, Tunisia, Cameroon, Algeria , Mali and Ivory Coast come behind Nigeria.
Courtesy of their debut AFCON victory, Sadio Mane- led Senegal occupy the 18th position in the world ranking. On the flip side, North African nation, Algeria who previously ranked number one in Africa have slithered to the 43rd position.
FIFA has described the new ranking method as the “SUM”, stating it relies on the addition and subtraction of points won or lost for a game to/won or lost for a game to/from the previous point totals, rather than averaging game points over a given time period, as in the previous version of the World Ranking.
FIFA on its website said;
“The points which are added or subtracted are partially determined by the relative strength of the two opponents, including the logical expectation that teams higher in the ranking should fare better against teams lower in the ranking”.
West European nation, Belgium retains the number one spot, with Brazil, France, Argentina, England, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Denmark and Netherlands following.
