A leading opposition politician and businessman, Chief Chris Nkwonta has formally defected from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Nkwonta who was formerly a Senatorial candidate in Abia South, was formally received into the PDP on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State.
Receiving Nkwonta and his over thousand supporters back to the PDP, the executive governor of Abia state, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu described him as a firm Chieftain, whom the party have been waiting for his return for the past 6 years.
The governor charged Nkwonta and his supporters to uphold the tenets of the party, assuring that their rights and privileges will be given them without discrimination.
The Governor said with the return of chief Nkwonta more good things will be happening in Ukwa East and urged the people of the area to throw their weight behind Chris Nkwonta.
Governor Ikpeazu disclosed that the 14 kilometre Obohia-Ohuru -Ngwa Road traversing through Ukwa East, Ugwunagbo and Aba South LGA’s which he flagged off earlier in the day during his trip to Ukwa East will be completed in good time. He also announced that palliative works will start on Obehie-Akwete-Azumini Road from next week, to make the road motorable.
In his speech, PDP State Chairman, Rt. Hon. Asiforo Okere expressed profound joy for the historic return of Chief Chris Nkwonta to the PDP family and thanked him and his supporters for deciding to rejoin the party, describing him as a great political leader, who would make the PDP voice in Ukwa and the entire state louder.
In his remarks, Chief Chris Nkwonta thanked the Governor and the party leadership for the opportunity to reunite with his main political family and assured of his unflinching support to build the party to enviable height, saying that he is confident that his return to the party will bring overall development of the party in the State and beyond. He described the day as remarkable for him and appreciated the Governor for his untiring efforts in developing Abia through the PDP.
In their various speeches, some stakeholders of PDP in Ukwa East including the member representing Ukwa East at the State House of Assembly, Hon. Paul Taribo, Sole Administrator of ASOPADEC, Chief Emeka Stanley and Ukwa East PDP Chairman, Sir Okechi Nwohu described Chief Chris Nkwonta as an Iroko and politician of class, expressing happiness over his reintegration into PDP.
They assured him that he is not going to queue behind, adding that his coming back to the party will strengthen PDP in Ukwa land. They appreciated Governor Ikpeazu for his commitment to fixing the main link between Ukwa East and Aba, and assured him of their continuous support.
