Abia Poly Students, Police Clash: This Is Just The Beginning, SUG President Ibe Prince, Declares

The Student Union President [ SUG ]of Abia state Polytechnic Aba, Comrade Prince Ibe has stated that Thursdays’ clash with men of the Nigerian police is just the beginning of a long-drawn battle between the students of the polytechnic and operatives of the Nigerian police Special Response Squad SRS. Unless urgent steps are taken by the Abia state government and the Nigerian police top hierarchy to bring to an end what he described as incessant harassment, rape and extortion of the students of the polytechnic by operatives SRS of the Nigerian police.

 

The students on Thursday poured out on the streets to protest against the SRS operatives over alleged raping of a female student of the polytechnic by three operatives of SRS after allegedly whisking her away from their lodge located on Immaculate Street of the commercial town. The SRS operatives were said to have taken the lady alongside others to an undisclosed location where they allegedly jointly raped one of the female students.

The alleged victim as at the time reporting is said to be receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in ABA. The protesting students in their thousands stormed the ever-busy Aba Owerri road, erecting barricades, blocking and preventing free flow movements. The SUG President in an exclusive chart with All FACTS NEWSPAPER lamented that for some time now operatives of SRS of the Nigerian Police have been harassing, intimidating, extorting and indiscriminately arresting students of the polytechnic most times over spurious allegations. Noting that the time has come for them to halt the ugly Trend before it assumes the same dimensions with the modus operandi of the now disbanded SARS.

” For some time now operatives of SRS have been making life difficult for the students. Every day we at the students Union government Secretariat will inundated will reports of mass arrest and extortion of the students. Initially we complained to the polytechnic management through the Dean students Affairs and any time we complained the kept on urging for restrain promising that they looking into the matter. But the situation instead of abetting kept on worsening. This case of raping of one student is what broke the camel’s back and we say enough is enough. Our resolve now is that what is happening today is just the beginning. We have declared war with the operatives of SRS and will continue in this direction unless the authorities concern takes steps to halt this trend of police making life difficult for our students.” SUG President Speaks.
