Abia extrajudicial killing: Sen. Ohuabunwa furious, demands thorough investigation

Senator Mao Ohuabunwa has expressed fury over the brutal killing of a 17-year old Friday Arusi by the police on illegal duty at Ebem Ohafia over the weekend.

The incident which has generated angry reactions and condemnation from across the country sparked spontenous reprisal as irate youths set ablaze police patrol vans at the vicinity.

The Abia State Police Command had blamed the incident on the influence of alcohol, saying the killer cop was drunk.

Senator Ohuabunwa, in his reaction, described the incident as “reckless irresponsiblity” on the part of security operatives.

He said it sounded very strange that security agents whose constitutional responsibility was to protect lives and property, “have turned out to be terrors to the same lives they are being paid to protect”.

Ohuabunwa said that senseless waste of lives and property of innocent citizens should be completely discouraged in the state and country at large.

The former Speaker, ECOWAS Parliament, called on the Inspector General of Police , as well as the Abia State Police Commissioner to ensure proper and thorough investigation of the incident.

He also demanded immediate prosecution of the killer cop and his collaborators to serve as a deterrent to others.

The former Speaker, ECOWAS Parliament further advocated periodic psychiatric examination of security agents to ascertain the state of their mental health to avoid “strange incidents as this “.

Senator Ohuabunwa urged the police hierachy to put adequate measures in place to put an end to the rampart extra -judiciary killings by the police and other security personnel particularly in South East geopolitical zone.

He noted with regrets, that since the beginning of the covid-19 lockdown in the zone, security agents had killed more persons than than the pandemic.

Ohuabunwa, condoled with the family of the deceased as well as relations of other victims of extrajudicial killings in the zone.

He however, lauded the Army authorities particularly the Brigade Commander in charge of Ohafia, Army Brigade for his timely intervention which prevented escalation of the spontenous angry reaction by angry youths.

He, therefore, appealed for calm among residents of the affected community, assuring them that those responsible for the dastardly act will not be allowed to escape justice.
