The Chancellor of Gregory University Uturu Prof Gregory Ibe has joined his voice to the call for thorough investigation on the shooting of unarmed youths involved in peaceful protest under the umbrella of #ENDSARS at Lekki toll plaza in Lagos State.
Speaking on the heels of yet to be confirmed reports of increase in the number of casualties from the military onslaught at Lekki toll plaza, Prof Ibe who also doubles as chairman of the committee of proprietors of private universities in Nigeria, charged the authorities to leave no stone unturned in fishing out the perpetuators of the dastardly act.
According to Prof Ibe, “My heart bleeds at the level of casualty arising from a peaceful protest conducted by our children aimed at drawing attention to cases of brutality and other forms of wrongdoing by security agencies. While grieving for all the casualties, as a teacher and critical stakeholder in the education sector,I am most pained by the unfortunate loss of Anthony Okechukwu aka Tonycruz, a young student of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, who was allegedly gunned down during the peaceful protest at Lekki toll plaza.
This is extra judicial killing taken too far and justice must not just be done but must be clearly seen by all and sundry to have been done.Young lives definitely do matter.I therefore call for thorough investigation by relevant authorities into the circumstances that led to this avoidable tragedy and subsequent prosecution of all accomplices found culpable”,he concluded.
Correspondents report that the mass media has been awash with images of victims of shooting of #ENDSARS protesters at Lekki toll plaza, which has subsequently sparked off reactions locally and internationally.
