Emergency Meeting in Enugu, as Lassa Fever Outbreak reported in ESUT

Following a report of a Lassa Fever outbreak in Enugu State University Teaching Hospital Park lane Enugu, an emergency meeting of stakeholders of the hospital has been convened to discuss a way forward.

In an attendance were the acting C-MAC Head and Consultants of some departments/units, the Head of Nursing Services as well as representatives of the State Ministry of Health and the President of Association of Resident Doctors in Enugu State University Teaching Hospital.

The meeting was to formally notify the general public of the confirmed case of Lassa Fever in the Teaching Hospital which has been reported to the National Council for Disease Control and Enugu State office of the World Health Organization.

According to Dr. Chima Emmanuel Edoga, the index case was first presented at the A&E of ESUT-TH Parklane on Wednesday the 15th of January 2020, and was admitted into the Medical Ward/Annex on Friday 17th of January 2020 as case of Pneumonia, regretting that a patient who was designated as a suspected case of Lassa Fever died on Tuesday, 21st January 2020.

Dr. Edoga hinted that the State Epidemiology team has requested for more stock of PPE, tablets, and IV of Ribavarin from the Disease control office, adding that the hospital management will come up with a Domesticated Protocol for Lassa Fever Prevention and management.
