9th Senate Nickname Is Undeserving – Senator Abba Moro Kicks | READ DETAILS
Senator Abba Moro, Senator representing Benue South district has said that the unfortunate nickname given to the 9th Senate as “a rubber stamp senate” is unwarranted
Abba Moro expressed his displeasure on Tuesday in Abuja on the inappropriateness of the nickname given to the 9th Senate, adding that sometimes, some of the criticisms of the activities of the Senate of the 9th Assembly are born out of lack of proper understanding of the dynamics involved.
The senator reiterated that in parliamentary practices, the relationship between the parliament and the executive is expedient, saying that lawmaking is about providing for good governance and does not require avoidable confrontations.
He said: “It is not everything that comes from the president of the executive that is wrong as people want to think. And I can assure you that even though in certain circumstances it would appear that the Senate has not been able to pander to the aspirations of the people but it doesn’t really mean that the senate was always a lame duck of the institution.”
Speaking on the achievements of the 9th Senate, Abba Moro said with all sense of responsibility that the 9th Senate has performed fairly well on the basis of the fact that the Senate has introduced some innovations.
He said that amendments have been made to traditional ways of doing things and creating a new innovative platform for activities to take place with less human touch, more digital application of technology.
“The Senate has achieved a budgetary arrangement that runs within a full year and the 9th Assembly have been able to effectively follow it for the past three years.
“We Introduce a January to December budget cycle, which ordinarily, apart from the administrative bottlenecks found on the way, should ease the application and implementation of the budget.
“The executive was supposed to implement a budget from January to December but unfortunately we had hiccups here and there. That’s why the budget cycle has to be extended to March. We hope that the 10th Senate will be able to maintain that standard of January to December.
“Again look at the electoral process and the human errors that have complicated the electoral process. A final attempt was made at introducing technology into the electoral process and the intention is that the human limitations that occasioned the scuttles of electoral process or destruction of our electoral process is being taken care of by the introduction of the Bvas and so forth.
” Returning to Senate 10th, I should be able to block all the loopholes and ensure an enduring democracy in Nigeria and pass several bills bordering on constitutional reforms, bordering on electoral reforms, and sensitive bills also that directly affect the lives of the Nigerian people.” he said.
