Stakeholders of Abia North Youth have reiterated their position that the 2023 governorship position should be zoned to Abia North Senatorial District as the Charter of Equity demands.
The youths reaffirmed their stand on Saturday, March 5, 2022 during a press conference in Umuahia, noting that power has rotated round the senatorial zones, and as such should return to Abia North.
The press conference, a first of its kind was organised by Office of the Abia North Senatorial District Representative, Nigerian Youth Parliament in conjunction with major youths stakeholders/Bodies across Abia North.
The Abia North World Youth Press Conference 2022, was themed; “Unveiling the Abia North Youth Agenda, Key to Sustainable Leadership”.
Speaking, the Convener, Hon. Chris Chiagozie Egbu, member representing Abia North Senatorial District, Nigerian Youth Parliament in the National Assembly, Abuja called on eligible sons of Abia North extraction to aspire for the state Governorship position come 2023.
Hon. Egbu regretted that the Nation has not given youths an opportunity to thrive, rather the leaders have developed a sit tight syndrome, disenfranchising the youths.
He urged Abia and Nigerian youths at large not to relent but be visionary and proactive in political matters for good governance.
He also called on the Abia state House of Assembly to make youth-oriented laws to integrate them in the State’s development.
According to Egbu, Youth of Abia North Senatorial District will soon stage a one-million-man match to the government House, State Assembly, etc to demand that the office of the governor should be zoned to Abia North.
He noted that Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has done well in terms of road construction in Aba, the commercial city, however he pleaded with the governor to replicate same in Abia North.
On his own part, Comrade Ebenezar Chukwuemeka Kalu, secretary, press conference planning committee, called on the youths to engage in governance as the long-awaited future has come.
Kalu also called on political parties to slash the cost of the nomination forms to give youths a chance to embrace politics.
“The time is now for youths to engage actively in governance. It is time we get up to action, it is time we get to participate, get yourself into politics, get yourselves registered for the PVCs.
“Protests, agitations on social media alone will not change our governance but when we get actively involved by having our PVCs to decide who goes for us or who does not go for us, when we become members of political parties, to decide the best candidate to come out of each political parties to represent us.”
Another speaker, lady Oby Nwaobi Called on relevant authorities to encourage skills acquisition for youths to reduce unemployment and crime.
Others at the conference include; Dr. Stephen Ukpai Ohafia, chairman, planning committee represented by Comrade Rowland Emeaga; representatives of Abia Young Ladies organization, led by Tracy Akwarandu.
