At its 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on August 25, 2025, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) confirmed Umar Damagum as the substantive National Chairman—a role he will hold until the elective national convention scheduled from November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Why Did NEC Confirm Damagum?
To Ensure Continuity and Stability: Damagum had been serving as acting chairman since March 2023, after a court-approved removal of the former chairman, Iyorchia Ayu. Confirming him now avoids another leadership vacuum just weeks before the convention.
Reward for Crisis Management: NEC cited Damagum’s success in stabilizing the party through turbulent times, praising the National Working Committee (NWC) under his leadership for keeping the party intact
Zoning and Internal Balance Considerations: The confirmation aligns with broader NEC resolutions to retain regional leadership balance: while the chairmanship remains in the North, the 2027 presidential ticket is zoned to the South
Unified Front for the November Convention: Party leadership—including the Governors’ Forum and BoT—were commended for ensuring the party is prepared for the Ibadan convention. Confirming Damagum cements authority and signals unity
In his remarks, Damagum thanked the NEC for the trust and emphasized that he and the NWC navigated the party through its toughest challenges, ensuring it remains “one indivisible party”
His confirmation was formalized through an oath administered by PDP’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, as stipulated in Article 65 of the party constitution.
