Extortion Military/Road Safety Checkpoints : Abia Residents Protest |PHOTOS

A protest erupted yesterday at Osisioma axis of the Enyimba city Aba, Abia State. The protesters who were carrying placards where protesting against multiple and illegal military checkpoints in Aba.

 

According to a Facebook user resident in Aba who shared the information with AFNEWS. The protesters were carrying placards with inscription such as “STOP USING NAVY, POLICE AND ARMY FOR EXTORTION”, “NAVY STOP ILLEGAL ROAD BLOCK IN OSISIOMA”, “STOP THIS EXTORTION, NAVY, POLICE AND ARMY”, Among others.

When asked by AFNEWS on his opinion concerning the ongoing protest, he said ” Well,I support this protest because I too have suffered series of harassment and vehicle breakdown as a result of this road block the military set up in front of Eng Nana Nwafors company.”

 

” The road block do result to a long queue of traffic while the Navy personnel would be busy collecting #500 from bus, #200 from keke and #1000 from big motors .”

According to him “It is a daily thing and everybody knows but my confusion is that we don’t have any naval Base in osisioma so where do they come from?”

 

Not only is the Naval Officers causing serious issues there , but the worst is that ” The federal road safety commission as well now uses this same avenue created by the Nigerian navy to form another road blocks , even as this protest is going on they are at Osisioma junction”.

He wondered ” When assisting the Navy form road blocks became a primary duty assigned to men of the Federal Road Safety Corp “.

 

Well, the protest went on yesterday but the question in the mind of many people is when will this illegal and unconstitutional check point set up by the military across roads in southeast end . Because it has outlived it usefulness and more or less serving as avenue to extort money from road users.
