Thousands of supporters loyal to former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, trooped out in large numbers in Kano to welcome the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in a development that is already generating political discussions ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

In a video seen by observers, the crowd was heard chanting “Obi/Kwankwaso! Obi/Kwankwaso!”, a development that has further fueled speculation about a possible political alliance between the two political heavyweights ahead of the next general elections.

The large turnout and the chants suggest growing political cooperation between supporters of both politicians, especially in northern Nigeria where Obi struggled to secure significant votes during the 2023 presidential election.

Political analysts have repeatedly pointed out that one of the major challenges faced by Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election was the absence of strong northern votes, despite his popularity in the South-East, South-South, and parts of the South-West.

Observers say a potential alliance between Obi and Kwankwaso could significantly change the political equation ahead of the 2027 presidential election, especially if the northern political structure of Kwankwaso aligns with Obi’s strong support base in the southern part of Nigeria.

Kwankwaso, who was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 election, remains one of the most influential political figures in northern Nigeria, particularly in Kano State and surrounding areas.

The crowd chanting Obi/Kwankwaso has raised fresh conversations in political circles about a possible alliance that could reshape the 2027 presidential election.

Analysts believe that if Peter Obi secures strong northern backing while maintaining his southern support base, the political landscape in Nigeria could witness a major shift.

Many political observers believe that Kano State, which is one of the most politically influential states in Nigeria due to its voting population, could play a major role in determining future presidential election outcomes.

The reception given to Obi by supporters in Kano is therefore being interpreted by some political observers as a possible sign of early political alignment ahead of 2027.

Although no official political alliance has been announced by either Peter Obi or Rabiu Kwankwaso, the public display of support and the chants of Obi/Kwankwaso have further strengthened speculation that discussions may be ongoing among political stakeholders.

Observers say the 2027 election may likely be shaped by political coalitions and alliances rather than individual party strength, as seen in previous Nigerian elections.

If such an alliance eventually materializes, analysts say it could become one of the most powerful political coalitions in the country.

For now, the video of the Kano crowd welcoming Peter Obi continues to generate reactions across Nigeria’s political space.
