Senegal has made history with their first win in the just concluded African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2021 fiesta in Cameroon.
The Lions of Teraga had scaled through tasking games in the group, round of 16, quarter and semi final stages to gain a spot at the finals for the coveted trophy against Carlos Queiroz’s Pharaohs of Egypt.
Sadio Mane’s Senegal defeated Mo Salah’s Egypt in the final showdown on Sunday, 6th of February 2022 , clinching a deserved first time victory on penalty kicks that ended with 4-2 score line at Olembe Stadium in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
The two teams played 90 minutes and extra time in a goalless deadlock before a penalty shoot-out was introduced, seeing Liverpool’s winger, Sadio Mane slide the winning goal through the bottom left corner of goalkeeper Mohammed Abou Gabal’s goal post.
This meant 29-year-old Mane made up for missing a decisive penalty shot against Egypt in normal time, seven minutes into the game.
Sadio Mane has been declared the Man of the tournament, a relished title that accompanies his championed victory against seven-time AFCON victors, Egypt.
