Controversy has continued to trail the alleged Congresses of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) taking place in Abia state as majority of the Congress elected Chairmen of the 17 LGA have condemned the exercise describing it as a charade that cannot stand the test of time.
Speaking during a press conference held in Umuahia, the Chairman of the Party in Umuahia South, Chief Omerenma Ogbonna, condemned the action of the State Working Committee of the party which according to him has destroyed whatever progress that would have come out from the recently held “Unity Meeting Convened” by the National Leadership of the party and which took place at the party Secretariat in Umuahia.
Chief Ogbonna who spoke on behalf of twelve LGA Chairmen of the party, regretted that the constitution of the party is being grossly violated by those who want to destroy the party in Abia, by violating peaceful agreement earlier reached, and by going ahead to secretly select unfit persons and impose them as party executives, against the provisions of the constitution of the party, while isolating majority of the Congress elected LGA Chairmen.
He warned that the latest action would lead to the burial of the party in Abia, as those perpetrating the act have proven that they are more interested in occupying positions for the purpose of witch hunt and personal gains, rather than moving the party forward.
The LGA Chairmen warned that APGA is not a secret cult, thus its Congresses must be openly done in a manner that would meet the expectations and desires of her members and teeming supporters, and regretted that the party is claiming to be conducting a congress when Congress forms were seen no where and LGA offices of the party witnessed no exercise.
It would be recalled that the National Executive of APGA recently met and issued guidelines for the conduct of its Congresses at all levels, however, the NEC meeting drew serious controversies and condemnations from different quarters, as some National Officers claimed they were sidelined because of what they described as their opposition to the incompetent leadership of the Victor Oye led National Working Committee whom they claimed wants to return himself as National Chairman after allegedly destroying the party.
Investigation has shown that majority of APGA members and stakeholders, especially in Imo, Abia and Anambra are stoutly opposed to the return of Oye as the National Chairman of APGA, however it appears that the national chairman is enjoying the support of the Anambra governor, Chief Willie Obiano.
Observers have predicted that the party would be heading for a protracted legal tussle that could destroy it if the present impasse is not amicably resolved.
