The Anambra State Police Command has said that one Uchenna James Okafor who reportedly died while in police custody after he was arrested, was involved in an armed robbery.
There has been an outrage over the sudden death of the victim who was earlier reported to have been arrested alongside two others for fighting in Awka.
According to a Twitter user, the trio were requested by the police to pay a damage fee of N150,000. The parents of the deceased were said to have visited him on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 where they attempted to pay N50,000 but were asked to return on Thursday as the IPO was not on seat and doesn’t work on Wednesdays.
Returning on Thursday, the parents were reportedly told that their son hit his head on the wall and died a night before.
Responding in a Twitter thread, the Anambra State Police Command called on the parents of the deceased to report to the office of the PRO with facts.
The command added;
“While we are waiting for the victim’s family to come forward, I wish to state that from the brief I have now, its not a case of fighting as alleged but an armed robbery case and other gang members are still in custody. The case is still under investigation please.”
