Fire Extinguisher Campaign in Abia: Govt Makes Safety Mandatory for Homes & Businesses

Abia State Government has launched a fire extinguisher campaign making it mandatory for all homes, offices, and businesses to own one. Powered by the Abia State Orientation Agency. Read full details.

“Be the first firefighter in your home – Governor’s new policy aims to save lives and properties across Abia State”

In a bold move to protect lives and properties, the Abia State Government has kicked off a massive sensitization campaign mandating the use of fire extinguishers in every home, office, and business facility across the state.

The campaign, powered by the Abia State Orientation Agency, climaxed in Aba on 20th September 2025 after three days of intensive awareness programs that cut across radio, markets, and community gatherings.

Speaking on the initiative, Arch. Arua Nnanna, Chief Fire Officer of Abia State Fire Service, stressed that preparedness is the first weapon against fire disasters.

“Anyone faced with fire can only be said to be equipped if they have the materials to fight it. A fire extinguisher at your doorstep makes you more effective than a fireman coming from 20 miles away. The governor is telling us to always be ready. Fire extinguishers should be within reach because the first responder in any fire outbreak is YOU,” Nnanna said.

He emphasized that fire outbreaks spread quickly, and without immediate response, damages often become irreversible.

Also lending her voice, Ure Abazie, Director General of Abia State Orientation Agency, described the policy as a life-saving directive inspired by recent events.

“This whole campaign started after the Enyimba FM fire incident some months ago. The governor realized that if fire extinguishers had been available, that tragedy could have been averted. Immediately, he issued an executive order that every home, office, and business in Abia State must have a fire extinguisher,” Abazie explained.

She added that fire cannot be stopped by panic or shouting, but only by prompt action with the right equipment.

“Our governor is pragmatic and proactive. Vendors of certified fire extinguishers are already available across Abia State. This campaign is not just about compliance—it’s about valuing our lives and investments. I appeal to Ndi Abia to take this seriously. Fire extinguishers are effective, safe, and essential,” she said.

The message is clear: every household and business in Abia must take responsibility as the first line of defense against fire disasters. With the governor’s directive and the ongoing sensitization, Abia State is setting the pace for safety consciousness across Nigeria.
