Lagos 2027: Obasa hints at governorship bid, rules out fifth term in assembly

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has disclosed that he is considering life beyond the Assembly and may pursue a governorship bid, depending on the position of his political party.

Obasa made this known during an interview on Television Continental, TVC, on Thursday while addressing questions about his past remarks on his political future.

In an earlier interview, the lawmaker had suggested that having served as a councillor and later as Speaker, the natural progression for him would be either to the Senate or the governorship. Responding to whether those ambitions remain, Obasa admitted that the aspiration still exists but stressed that the decision ultimately lies with the party leadership.

“Every politician has ambitions, but you get to a stage where you cannot determine what comes next. If you believe in the party structure, you understand that it’s about consultation, consensus, and the leadership’s direction,” he explained.

Obasa noted that while personal goals are important, final decisions must be consistent with the broader strategy of the party.

Obasa, who recently survived a leadership crisis that briefly unseated him as Speaker, also suggested that he is unlikely to contest for a fifth term in the Assembly.

Asked if he would seek re-election as a legislator, he replied, “Not really,” hinting that his attention may be shifting to higher responsibilities.
