“The Enugu State Government has issued a 90-day ultimatum for churches and mosques to remove outdoor loudspeakers and install soundproofing, aiming to address noise pollution in residential areas.”
The Enugu State Government has issued a 90-day ultimatum for all churches and mosques to remove outdoor loudspeakers and install soundproofing measures within their worship centers. This move is part of the state’s broader Anti-Noise Pollution Policy aimed at reducing noise disturbances, particularly in residential areas.
The directive follows a significant number of complaints from residents regarding excessive noise levels from religious institutions. At a stakeholders’ meeting organized by the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA), church and mosque leaders, alongside government officials, discussed the implementation of these new regulations. The government stressed the importance of balancing religious practices with the rights of residents to a peaceful environment.
This is not the first noise control initiative by the Enugu State Government; similar measures were introduced for nightclubs and entertainment venues in December 2023.
The policy has sparked mixed reactions, with some religious leaders expressing concern over its impact on worship, while others view it as a positive step toward better community relations.
