ABIA: Plot To Impeach Gov. Ikpeazu Intensifies | READ WHY
The last days of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu as the executive governor of Abia State, may likely be laborious as some State House of Assembly members are allegedly plotting to impeach him from office.
ALL FACTS NEWSPAPER gathered from credible sources who pleaded anonymity that majority of the House members especially those from Abia Central and Abia South, are fully in support of the move to impeach Governor Ikpeazu who has barely two months to leave office.
According to our sources, the House members pushing for Ikpeazu’s impeachment are aggrieved with the governor over certain issues which include;
- the events that played out during the PDP primary election where most of the candidates were denied ticket.
- the party leadership sidelining them and rejecting their advices regarding the election as House/party members and
- PDP failing woefully in the recently concluded 2023 general election. According to these House members, Ikpeazu’s non-performance in the state for almost 8 years, contributed largely to PDP’s failure in the elections which they regretted has cost the party a lot.
Though some of the House members are in support of this alleged plot to impeach the governor, they are still looking out for an impeachable offence(s) on which ground they will conclude their impeachment plans.
At the moment, ALL FACTS NEWSPAPER cannot authoritatively tell the position of the Abia State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji on the proposed impeachment of the governor. However, AFNEWS will continue investigating into the matter.
Recall that Governor Okezie Ikpeazu who was first elected in 2015 and 2019, lost his senatorial ambition after the February 25, 2023 election. He lost his bid to represent Abia South senatorial district to Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).
To add to the governor’s travail, his anointed governorship candidate, Chief Okey Ahiwe lost the March 18, 2023 governorship election to Dr. Alex Otti of the Labour Party.
Otti got 175,467 votes to beat Ahiwe who scored 88,529 votes. PDP’s defeat at the governorship election, has marked an end to the power of incumbency in the state and the party’s 24 years straight of staying in the corridors of power in Abia State.
