The Supreme Court has upheld the election of Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, dismissing Timipre Sylva’s appeal as lacking merit and aligning with previous court rulings.
The Supreme Court of Nigeria has reaffirmed the election of Senator Douye Diri as the Governor of Bayelsa State. In a unanimous judgment delivered on Friday, the apex court dismissed the appeal filed by Timipre Sylva, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), challenging Diri’s victory.
Justice Garba Lawal, who delivered the lead judgment, declared that Sylva’s appeal was not only without merit but also constituted a gross abuse of the court process. The decision of the Supreme Court aligns with the earlier rulings of both the Court of Appeal and the Bayelsa Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.
The Court of Appeal had, on July 18, 2024, upheld the decision of the Election Petition Tribunal, which had previously affirmed Diri’s reelection on November 11, 2023. Both the Tribunal and the Court of Appeal found that Sylva and the APC failed to provide credible evidence to support their claims against the election outcome.
