The Abia State Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Chief Emeka Ikwuagwu says the aim of Abia State school sports festival is to present sporting activities in the spotlight and decentralize the concentration which youths always have on only football, and introduce them to other sporting events.
Chief Ikwuagwu who stated this during an elaborate interview with AFNews officials in his office, revealed that about 18 different sports will be exposed to the students during the festival.
He hinted that over 5,000 youths in Abia State will be participating, which will help to discover lots of talents in different sports, stressing that by the time talent and skills are discovered, empowerment will take place and the State will be a house hold name in different sporting activities.
The Sports Commissioner explained that the combination of academics with sporting events will bring about less dependent on white collar jobs which has become the lots of our youths in recent past.
Chief Ikwuagwu noted that during this period, sports promoters will be invited to help pick people for oversea training and scholarship, adding that youths have a lot to gain beyond the awards to be given.
Continuing, the Sports henchman expressed delight in the sporting activities in the State, saying that in Paralympic games, Abia State is taking the lead in the whole Federation, especially in weight lifting, Taekwondo and shotputs.
