The 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has weighed in on the recent confrontation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer, describing it as “a national embarrassment and a reflection of Nigeria’s deep institutional decay.”
In a strongly worded statement titled “Wike versus Naval Officer: A Lesson for National Reflection,” Obi said the altercation, which has generated widespread outrage, represents more than a personal misunderstanding — it exposes the erosion of respect for law, order, and institutional boundaries in the country.
“What should ordinarily be a routine civic encounter has, once again, become a national embarrassment — a typical example coming out of a ‘disgraced country,’” Obi stated.
The former Anambra governor questioned why a civilian authority such as a minister would publicly confront a serving officer on lawful duty, insisting that the incident raises deeper questions about Nigeria’s governance culture and institutional discipline.
He asked:
“Should the military be used for purely civil operations? Should a Minister’s intervention in such a matter be in such an indecorous manner? Shouldn’t there be clear boundaries between administrative authority and the duties of security agencies?”
Obi lamented that the nation has gradually normalized disorder, where public officials act without restraint and institutions have become weak shadows of their purpose.
“When public officials act beyond institutional norms, and when security agencies are used in ways that blur their professional boundaries, we weaken both governance and public trust,” he said.
He called for a national reawakening, urging leaders to show civility and uphold due process, especially in public service.
“A country that aspires to greatness and feels insulted when referred to as a disgraced nation must replace the culture of impunity with the discipline of law, order, and respect for due process,” Obi emphasized.
The former governor maintained that holding titles such as His Excellency or Honourable should come with humility, dignity, and leadership by example.
“To occupy an office and be referred to as His Excellency, Distinguished or Honourable, how we get to such an office and our behaviour while holding it should reflect such titles in all ramifications,” he stated.
He concluded his statement with a familiar line:
“A New Nigeria is POssible.”
