What was meant to be a festive celebration of culture and unity at the annual August meeting in Ugwunagbo Local Government Area of Abia State turned into a heartbreaking tragedy on Monday, August 18, 2025, when popular entertainer, Mrs. Nwandinma Dickson, widely known as “Nwayi Garri,” collapsed and died during a live performance.
The 65-year-old Nwayi Garri, a native of Oza Umuebukwu in Nneji autonomous community, was one of the highlights of the occasion, celebrated for her unique mix of dance, drama, and humor that often left audiences entertained and inspired.
Eyewitnesses said she was in her usual vibrant spirit, dressed in colorful attire, moving between canopies to greet and entertain dignitaries and guests when tragedy struck. Midway into her performance, she stooped briefly before slumping to the ground.
At first, many guests mistook the incident as part of her theatrical display, cheering and clapping. But the excitement quickly turned to shock when she failed to respond.
The Mayor of Ugwunagbo LGA immediately arranged a vehicle to rush her to a nearby hospital. Sadly, medical personnel pronounced her dead on arrival.
Speaking with journalists, family members disclosed that Nwandinma had initially been reluctant to attend the meeting but decided to honor her commitment to the women and community who had long admired her performances.
While the exact cause of her death remains unclear, some community members suspect a possible sudden blood pressure complication, though an official medical report is still being awaited.
Her passing has cast a shadow of grief over Ugwunagbo and beyond. Tributes have been pouring in from residents and cultural enthusiasts across Abia State who described “Nwayi Garri” as a vibrant spirit whose contributions to local cultural life will never be forgotten.
As the community mourns this devastating loss, many await official clarification on the circumstances surrounding her untimely death.
