Distinguished Senator Darlington Nwokocha has emerged as the newly elected President of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) Alumni Association, signaling the dawn of a new era for one of Nigeria’s most prestigious alumni bodies. His victory has been widely celebrated by members of the alumni community, who see in him a dynamic leader capable of repositioning the association for national and international impact.
In his acceptance speech delivered shortly after the official announcement of the election results, Senator Nwokocha described his emergence not just as a personal achievement but as a collective triumph. “Being elected President of this prestigious Alumni Association is not just an honour; it is a sacred trust, entrusted to me by a community of trailblazers, innovators, and leaders shaping industries, policies, and lives across the globe,” he said.
A Mission Anchored on the 3Rs
The seasoned lawmaker and former Senate Minority Whip declared that his leadership would focus on a comprehensive 3-point agenda, the “3Rs”: Reconnect, Reinvest, and Reposition.
🔹 Reconnect – Senator Nwokocha pledged to establish vibrant networks that link alumni across generations and geographies. Plans are underway to roll out interactive digital platforms, host regular reunion events, and create regional chapters that will keep the spirit of UNIPORT alive among its global alumni.
🔹 Reinvest – A core pillar of his agenda is to mobilize resources, knowledge, and influence to give back to the university. “We will channel our collective capacity into supporting the University’s academic growth, infrastructural upgrade, and institutional excellence,” he assured.
🔹 Reposition – The new President expressed determination to elevate the association into a formidable force within Nigeria’s civic, academic, and business landscapes. He envisions an alumni association that will actively contribute to public policy, economic advancement, and national discourse. “Let us reposition UNIPORT Alumni as a beacon of influence and a strategic force for nation-building,” he added.
From Public Service to Purposeful Leadership
Senator Nwokocha, who has previously served with distinction in both the Abia State House of Assembly and the National Assembly, brings a wealth of experience in governance, leadership, and institution building. He said his time in public service had prepared him for this new challenge, equipping him with the tools to drive large-scale reforms within the alumni structure.
“This is more than just an association—it is a movement. A movement to redefine alumni participation, support the next generation of leaders, and proudly showcase the excellence that UNIPORT represents globally,” the Senator declared.
He emphasized that the days of dormancy and disconnected leadership were over. Under his stewardship, the alumni body would become an engine for ideas, collaboration, and legacy.
Strong Mandate, Clear Roadmap
The election of Senator Nwokocha reflects the strong desire among UNIPORT graduates for visionary leadership. His acceptance speech has already sparked excitement, with many alumni expressing optimism that the new leadership will drive long-awaited reforms and expand opportunities for engagement.
