The Obidient Movement has revealed why it will only support Peter Obi as ADC presidential candidate and rejects any vice-presidential deal. Read full details.
The Obidient Movement has firmly shut down speculations surrounding its political direction ahead of the 2027 general elections, revealing that its support within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is strictly tied to Peter Obi’s presidential ambition—and nothing short of that.
In a strongly worded clarification, the movement made it clear that it will not support Peter Obi as a vice-presidential candidate to anyone, insisting that its nationwide mobilisation, structures, and grassroots energy are committed exclusively to Obi’s emergence as President of Nigeria.
The statement followed widespread reports attributed to the Obidient Movement’s National Coordinator, Yunusa Tanko, suggesting that the group would remain in the ADC even if Obi failed to clinch the party’s presidential ticket. The report quickly triggered internal backlash and public confusion.
Responding, Tanko dismissed the claims as “deliberate misrepresentation and malicious propaganda,” stressing that the Obidient Movement’s position has not changed.
According to the official statement, the movement’s philosophy is anchored on personality, principles, and purpose, all of which it says are embodied in Peter Obi.
“Let it be stated clearly and without ambiguity: The Obidient Movement is not mobilised to support Mr Peter Obi as a vice-presidential candidate to anyone. Our support is exclusively for his emergence as President of Nigeria.”
The group emphasised that while it reserves the right to align with any political party, such alignment is conditional on that platform fully backing Obi’s presidential bid.
The movement disclosed that it is currently backing Obi’s aspiration within the ADC, but issued a subtle warning that its continued participation depends on the credibility, transparency, and fairness of the party’s primary process.
“Should the process be compromised, the Movement will take a united, lawful, and democratic decision consistent with its core principles.”
Political observers say this statement signals that the Obidient Movement is prepared to walk away en bloc if it senses any manipulation—an option that could significantly reshape opposition calculations ahead of 2027.
The Obidient Movement’s stance effectively blocks any coalition arrangement that would relegate Peter Obi to a secondary role, complicating backroom negotiations among opposition power blocs seeking a “unity candidate.”
Analysts note that the declaration reinforces Obi’s image as the central rallying point for millions of politically awakened youths and professionals who powered his 2023 surge.
