The House of Representatives on Friday, July 16, passed the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, without ruling out the controversial Clause 52(2).
The clause allows the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to determine when, where and how voting and transmission of results will be done.
Clause 52(2) reads, “Voting at an election and transmission of result under this bill shall be in accordance with the procedure determined by the commission.”
Meanwhile, during deliberations and consideration of the bill, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers in the House, led by Minority Leader Ndidi Elumelu stormed out in protest.
During the prolonged consideration, the Speaker Femi Gbajabiamiala, appealed to members to allow consideration of other sections of the bill while leaving out the controversial section.
The passed bill entails that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has the sole responsibility to decide on the mode of transmission for electoral results.
