Oyo Police are demanding a bribe from a University of Ibadan student before returning laptops they recovered from burglars.
Policemen at the Osuntokun police station in the Bodija area of Ibadan, Oyo State, are refusing to return two laptops they recovered from burglars who had broken into the home of Favour Etunwoke, a University of Ibadan student, on May 12.
The police are reportedly demanding compensation from Favour for the recovery of his items, which were taken from another state. Favour explained to the press that he had first encountered the burglars in April when they had moved into his neighborhood. Despite their threats, the police initially dismissed his concerns and advised him not to pursue the matter.
After returning from a trip in June, Favour found his home ransacked and three laptops missing. When he reported the theft to the police, he was told to pay a bribe for them to act on his complaint. With the assistance of UI’s Student Union Government (SUG), the police eventually returned two of the laptops but claimed they needed compensation for their efforts and could not recover the third one.
On July 30, the press contacted Adewale Osifeso, Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, who promised to investigate the issue.
