Governor Alex Otti is set to launch three groundbreaking healthcare initiatives in Abia, including free health insurance, hearing aids, and medical outreach in partnership with the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation. Details inside.
In a landmark move aimed at transforming the health sector and enhancing access to quality medical care, the Abia State Government under the leadership of Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has announced the official launch of three major health initiatives in partnership with strategic health development organizations and the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation.
The announcement, made by the Hon. Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, outlined the health interventions as part of Governor Otti’s ongoing efforts to make quality healthcare accessible to all residents of the state, especially the underserved.
The three programmes slated for launch include:
- Formal Sector Health Insurance Scheme:
Designed to provide affordable and accessible healthcare coverage for workers in the public and private sectors, this initiative is expected to ease the financial burden of health emergencies on families. It aligns with the Otti administration’s commitment to building a robust health system where no citizen is left behind.
- Free Hearing Aid Distribution by the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation:
In collaboration with the globally recognized foundation led by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, this programme will offer hearing aids free of charge to Abians suffering from hearing impairments. It is a significant step toward inclusive healthcare that considers the needs of persons with disabilities.
- Free Medical Outreach:
This comprehensive outreach will kick off with a flag-off ceremony in Umuahia and will be fully implemented in Aba. It will feature free consultations, treatments, and minor surgeries for residents, with a focus on improving community health outcomes.

Governor Alex Otti will serve as the Chief Host, alongside representatives of the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation, top health professionals, and notable development partners.
Speaking on the significance of these programmes, the Information Commissioner emphasized that the initiatives represent a new dawn for healthcare delivery in Abia. He called on civil servants, health professionals, community leaders, and residents across the state to attend and take full advantage of the opportunity.
“This is a major step toward fulfilling our promise to deliver a health system that works for everyone,” Prince Okey Kanu stated.
