In a dramatic show of gratitude and recognition, Abia State Governor, Alex Chioma Otti, has rewarded a gallant Nigerian Army officer who played a key role in ending one of the darkest chapters in the state’s history.
The beneficiary, Staff Sergeant Amoke Gunshot Simeon, was part of the fearless military team that tracked down and neutralized the notorious kidnapping kingpin known as Osisikankwu, whose reign of terror once crippled Abia State and forced many residents to flee.
During a meeting at Government House, Umuahia, Governor Otti announced that the state would sponsor the soldier’s overseas medical treatment to ensure his full recovery.
The officer, who currently walks with crutches, sustained severe injuries after a motor accident while on active duty in the North-East following his service in Abia.
Moved by his sacrifice, Otti assured him that the Abia State Government would cover all expenses required to restore his health.
Staff Sergeant Simeon served in Abia State between 2010 and 2014, a period marked by widespread fear due to rampant kidnapping and violent crimes.
Recounting his experience, he explained that his unit was specifically deployed to track down kidnappers and dismantle criminal networks across the state.
“We were given the task to restore peace in Abia. It was a dangerous mission, but we stayed committed,” he said.
Their efforts eventually led to the elimination of Osisikankwu and the collapse of his criminal gang—an operation that brought relief and celebration across the state.
In a revelation that underscores his integrity, Simeon disclosed that the notorious kingpin had offered him ₦50 million to compromise the mission.
“I was promised ₦50 million to let him go. I refused. I chose to do my job,” he stated.
That decision, he said, earned him the respect and appreciation of Abians.
Simeon expressed deep gratitude to Governor Otti for remembering his contributions years after the operation.
“I am so happy that Abia State remembered me. This will motivate other officers to serve with dedication,” he said.
He described the Governor as compassionate and attentive, noting that the support has given him renewed hope.
Reflecting on his journey, the soldier emphasized that integrity and dedication always yield rewards.
“If I had accepted that offer, I wouldn’t be standing here today with honour. A good job pays,” he added.
Governor Otti’s gesture has been widely seen as a strong message that sacrifices made in service to the people will not be forgotten.
Observers say the move not only rewards bravery but also reinforces values of patriotism, integrity, and selfless service.
The intervention marks a symbolic closure to a painful era in Abia’s history, while also highlighting the importance of recognising those who risk their lives to secure peace.
