Residents of Orlu and Cameroon streets off Owerri road in Umuahia have hailed the latest decision of the government of the state to shut down major brothels littered across these streets.
In a special street investigation by reporters of AFN, there was palpable happiness in the streets as many people were relieved that the menace that was festering in the vicinity had been brought to an end by the government.
For Engineer Ibe Chinagorom a resident of the area, it is a very big burden being lifted by the authorities, as they have helped erase the rot in the area. According to Engr Chinagorom,”people have been robbed of their precious belongings in these areas of the street, as the street having been a den of drug addicts and criminals, has been impassable once it gets dark.
However, for another resident of Orlu street who pleaded anonymity, closing down the guest houses (brothels) hasn’t helped to bring solution to the place at all. He furthermore stated that the brothels on the street are places where prostitutes carry out their activities and hasn’t recorded any form of crime, rather the proper way to check criminal activities is-if the boys at the beginning of the street who stay at that spot to smoke and take hard drugs while waiting for their victims are made to leave the vicinity. He also pleaded with the government to bring a permanent solution to the area by bringing in security men to help maintain civility and security.
For the residents of Cameroon street, the message is still the same, however, they were thankful to the authorities in the state for coming to their aid to sanitize the vicinity and also keeping security men in the troubled spots.
