Lawmaker, Obinna Ichita Reveals Alleged Plot To Upturn Abians’ Mandate Using The Courts
Less than two weeks after Abians trooped out in their numbers to their various polling units to cast their votes during the March 18, 2023 governorship election, Honourable Obinna Ichita, a lawmaker in the Abia State House of Assembly representing Aba South state constituency, has lamented an alleged plot to overturn the mandate of the people.
Ichita in a statement he published on his Facebook handle on Wednesday, March 29, alleged that some politicians from Abia state and outside the state have approached some important personalities all in a bid to steal the mandate which Abians has already given using the judiciary to have a repeat of what happened in Imo state in 2020.
Recall that on January 14, 2020, the Supreme Court of Nigeria declared Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress (APC), winner of the 2019 governorship election in Imo State, therbey nullifying the election of the then-incumbent Governor of the state, Right Honourable Emeka Ihedioha.
Ichita who was the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), in his statement, cautioned those who are working to thwart the governorship election result already declared in Abia state, to consider the security implications of their actions, warning that Abia is not Imo state.
He also called on the Chief Justice of the Federation, Olukayode Ariwoola, to ensure that “the judiciary remains the hope of the common man.”
Honourable Ichita wrote;
The report that some politicians from Abia and some political actors elsewhere, have approached strategic personalities at the grand strategic level with a view to springing political surprises in Abia, is disturbing. It is unfortunate.
Having lost at the ballots, these personalities are reported to have resorted to “bargaining for a better outcome”. They want to achieve their aims through the courts.
I must caution that beyond political exigency, these personalities must consider the national security implication of their plans. The implication ( on the national security equation) of any act/ event that may lead to civil disobedience and/or popular revolt in Abia,must be considered by politicians across the board.
I call on the National Security Adviser to deploy intelligence assets as deeply as may be necessary to monitor the political development in Abia.
I also call on the Chief Justice of the Federation to ensure that the judiciary remains the hope of the common man.
Our people do not want any action/event that may lead to breakdown of law and order in another state of the South East.
The centrality of Aba, nah Abia, in the Security equation of the South East region is not in dispute.
Hence, caution must be exercised on issues concerning Abia.
Everyone knows that Abia is not Imo !
Obinna Ichita,
Member Abia State House of Assembly
