The two major ethnic groups in the south-south state of Akwa Ibom have been earmarked as part of the nations to constitute a future Biafran state.
Nnamdi Kanu – who leads the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) that wants to break away from Nigeria and form its own independent state Biafra, citing marginalisation, particularly from the Muhammadu Buhari led government – released what he called “Biafran Fundamental Principles And Policy”.
In it, Ibibio and Annang, alongside eleven other ethnic groups in present Nigeria, are to form the Biafran autonomous nations.
See the proposed nations below:
1. ANIOMA-IGBO
2. ANNANG

7. ALA-IGBO
8. IKWERE-IGBO

10. ISOKO
11. IZON
12. OGONI

However, the leader of the federal government designated terrorist group noted that to join the union of Biafra, each proposed constituent nation or sub-nation listed above “must vote in a referendum, where they will unambiguously assert their will to be part of the union of the State of Biafra”.
According to him, Biafra would be based on the “principle of equality of all constituent Biafra nations”.
“Every Nation in Biafraland shall have full ownership of all-natural resources found within their Region, for example, the oil and gas found in Izon land belongs to the Izon Nation, the gas, coal and oil found in Ala-Igbo belongs to the Ala-Igbo Nation. The same applies to every nation in Biafraland,” the policy reads in part.
Meanwhile, in celebration of democracy day on 12 June 2021, President Muhammadu Buhari hinted that the creation of Biafra was not going to be allowed during his time.
The 78-year-old former military head, said this: “As your President, I remain ever committed to upholding and defending Nigeria’s Corporate existence.”
