Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has announced the formation of a legal team in Lagos State to provide free legal representation for protesters who may face arrest during the upcoming nationwide protests on August 1st.
In a post on his X handle on Thursday, Effiong reiterated the importance of legal support for peaceful protesters and called on fellow legal professionals to join the initiative.
His words: “We are putting together a legal team in Lagos State to offer representation to any protester who may be arrested and/or charged to court during the forthcoming peaceful protest.
“My learned colleagues practicing in Lagos, please share your WhatsApp number with me via DM if you would love to offer pro bono services to protesters. History will vindicate the just.”
Effiong’s initiative comes amidst rising tensions in Lagos State, where traditional worshippers have announced the observance of the Oro Festival coinciding with the protest dates.
The state government has denied any involvement in the timing of the festival, urging both protesters and worshippers to respect each other’s rights to avoid conflict.
