Abia State reports major gains from global health partnerships and prepares for a large-scale medical mission. See how the government says these interventions are transforming healthcare. Read full story.

The Abia State Executive Council (EXCO) on Monday, December 9, 2025, held its regular weekly meeting presided over by the Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, during which key decisions shaping the state’s health and development agenda were announced.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, revealed that Abia State has continued to attract global recognition due to its expanding partnerships with reputable international health organizations—a collaboration that has now delivered massive economic and human-impact benefits.

According to recent reports from the Ministry of Health, these partnerships have helped the state save over ₦2.5 billion in healthcare costs, while also preventing avoidable deaths across communities.

Some of the active partners include Revive Belgium, ProHealth, Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation, Living Hope Foundation, NDDC, and other global medical missions.

Prince Kanu explained that beyond cost savings, the interventions have strengthened the state’s health infrastructure, improved access to quality medical services, and expanded specialized care for rural and underserved populations.

In another major announcement, EXCO confirmed that the Abia State Global Medical Mission will be held from December 15 to 20, 2025, bringing together dozens of international and local medical professionals.

The programme, he said, is a collaboration between the Abia State Government, the Abia State Diaspora Council, and the Ministry of Health, and is expected to deliver free medical services across a wide range of specialties.

“This outreach promises to be a significant medical programme that will positively impact the lives of Abians in many remarkable ways,” Kanu stated.

He noted that the medical mission aligns with the Otti administration’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery, reducing medical costs for families, and positioning Abia as one of the leading states in public health innovation and global collaboration.

The Commissioner added that more updates will be released as preparations intensify, urging residents to take full advantage of the life-changing opportunity.
